1. Fundamentals & How It Works
ProtecD® mineralization is a process used to protect and consolidate mineral building materials such as natural stone, concrete, brick, as well as mineral plasters and jointing materials.
The mineralizing agent penetrates the pores of the material and reacts with its mineral constituents. This reduces water absorption, consolidates the mineral structure and improves resistance to external influences.
Unlike film-forming coatings, the material’s natural water vapor permeability is largely preserved. Its original appearance is also maintained.
Conventional water-repellent treatment is primarily intended to reduce water absorption.
ProtecD® goes a significant step further: mineralization combines water repellency with additional consolidation of the mineral surface.
This reduces abrasion, surface dusting and the progressive loss of surface material.
Mineralization therefore not only protects against moisture but also contributes to the long-term preservation of the building material itself.
Many synthetic protective products are primarily designed to repel water or form a protective layer on the surface.
Film-forming sealers can restrict water vapor permeability and may peel away over time.
ProtecD®, by contrast, does not form a surface film. The mineralizing agent penetrates the mineral structure, consolidates the surface and reduces water absorption while largely preserving natural water vapor permeability.
Silane-siloxane impregnations also penetrate mineral substrates and make the pore surfaces water-repellent.
Their main function is to reduce water absorption.
ProtecD® combines this protective effect with additional mineral surface consolidation. This can also improve the mechanical resistance of the treated material.
Another difference is the intended durability of the mineral bond with the building material.
Yes. ProtecD® does not form a sealed surface film and largely preserves the material’s natural water vapor permeability.
According to the available test reports, water vapor permeability changes by less than 10% compared with untreated specimens (TS EN ISO 12572).
Moisture inside the building material can therefore continue to escape as water vapor.
Concrete admixtures are added to fresh concrete during production. They can affect workability, porosity and water resistance, among other properties.
ProtecD®, by contrast, is applied subsequently to the surface of hardened concrete.
The mineralizing agent penetrates the existing structure, reduces water absorption and consolidates the near-surface zones.
This means existing concrete structures can also be mineralized after construction.
2. Surface Consolidation, Hardness & Abrasion
ProtecD® mineralization improves the strength of the near-surface mineral structure.
According to the available test data, an increase in surface hardness of up to 2.5 points on the Mohs scale was observed in the limestone specimens tested.
The improvement actually achieved depends on the type, porosity and original condition of the natural stone.
Yes. Mineral consolidation makes the surface more resistant to mechanical stress.
The available test reports indicate an improvement in abrasion resistance of more than 23% according to TS 699.
This is particularly beneficial for heavily used areas such as pedestrian zones, railway stations, airports, shopping centers and parking garages.
Surface dusting occurs when fine mineral particles detach from the structure of a building material.
Possible causes include natural weathering, moisture, frost, salt exposure, mechanical stress or insufficient bonding within the original material.
For mineral mortars, excessive water during production can also increase porosity and impair resistance.
Mineralization can consolidate porous and weakened mineral surfaces, thereby significantly reducing surface dusting and the progressive loss of surface material.
This is particularly important for historic natural stone, brick, mineral plasters and traditional pointing mortars.
ProtecD® acts within the mineral structure without forming a film-forming coating.
However, in severely damaged or structurally unstable components, mineralization does not replace necessary restoration work.
3. Water Absorption, Weathering & Frost
ProtecD® reduces capillary water absorption without significantly restricting natural water vapor permeability.
According to the available test data, capillary water absorption was reduced by more than 53% compared with untreated reference specimens under EN 1925.
The actual performance depends on the porosity, absorbency and characteristics of the natural stone concerned.
Mineralization reduces water absorption and can therefore lower the risk of frost-related damage.
When less water enters the pores, the stresses associated with freezing and thawing are reduced.
According to the available test reports, frost-thaw resistance improved by more than 12% after 60 freeze-thaw cycles.
This is particularly relevant for façades, stairs, terraces, natural-stone paving and historic buildings.
4. Salt Damage, Efflorescence & Environmental Exposure
Salts can enter mineral building materials along with moisture and crystallize within the pores as the material dries.
The resulting crystallization pressure can cause surface dusting, spalling and loss of material.
By reducing water absorption, ProtecD® can limit the transport of dissolved salts.
The available test reports indicate an improvement of more than 53% in resistance to salt crystallization under EN 12370.
White efflorescence often forms when moisture carries soluble salts from the stone, bedding mortar or adjacent materials to the surface.
As the water evaporates, the salts remain as visible white deposits.
Rainwater, rising damp, de-icing salts and inadequate drainage can promote this process.
ProtecD® reduces water penetration into porous mineral surfaces and can therefore reduce the transport of soluble salts and the formation of new efflorescence.
However, mineralization does not automatically remove salts that are already present.
Existing salt contamination and the source of moisture should therefore be investigated before treatment.
A prior building-physics assessment is particularly necessary where rising damp or heavily salt-contaminated historic masonry is involved.
In urban and industrial environments, sulfur dioxide and other air pollutants can chemically attack mineral building materials.
ProtecD® reduces water absorption and improves the resistance of the treated surface.
According to the available test reports, resistance to sulfur dioxide exposure improved by more than 60% under EN 13919.
This can help reduce weather-related damage, particularly on natural-stone façades and historic buildings.
5. Health, Safety & Heritage Conservation
Depending on substrate type and material compatibility, ProtecD® is suitable for treating historic natural stone, brick, mineral plasters and pointing mortars.
Mineralization is intended to consolidate the original building fabric without applying a film-forming coating.
Material compatibility has been assessed, among other things, through studies conducted by the KURAM research laboratory at Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University.
For protected historic buildings, suitability should be confirmed before application through material analysis and appropriate test areas.
According to the available product information, the mineralization treatment is classified as A1 for reaction to fire.
ProtecD® does not form a combustible organic surface film. This is particularly relevant to mineral surfaces in public buildings, railway stations, tunnels and parking garages.
The precise fire classification and its scope are set out in the relevant technical test or classification reports.
The composition and safety-related properties of ProtecD® are documented in the relevant Safety Data Sheet.
ProtecD® is a mineral, non-film-forming protection system.
During application, the protective measures specified in the Safety Data Sheet must be followed, particularly regarding skin and eye contact and ventilation of the work area.
6. Durability & Long-Term Protection
ProtecD® mineralization is designed to provide long-term protection for mineral building materials.
Unlike film-forming coatings, it does not create an external protective layer that could peel away from the substrate.
The durability of the protective effect depends, among other things, on the treated material, correct application and the prevailing environmental conditions.
UV resistance was examined through accelerated laboratory aging tests.
According to the available information from the KURAM research center, 98.7% of the water-repellent performance remained after simulated UV exposure corresponding to 100 years.
This result documents high resistance to the UV exposure tested. However, it is not equivalent to a guaranteed service life of 100 years under all real-world environmental conditions.
